The Original Hard Rock Café:
The original Hard Rock Café opened June 14, 1971 in London’s Hyde Park across from Buckingham Palace. The site of the world-famous eatery was originally an old Rolls Royce showroom in the posh part of London. The first U.S. Hard Rock Café was not opened until 11 and a half years later. The Los Angeles Hard Rock Café opened in October of 1982.
How Did The Collection Get Started?
The collection was started when Eric Clapton, a regular customer at the original Hard Rock Café London asked the staff if he could hang his guitar on the wall to mark his favorite bar stool as “his spot.” They did, and shortly after, a package arrived from The Who’s Pete Townshend with a guitar and a note bearing the message, “Mine’s as good as his! Love, Pete.”
Where Did the Famous Logo Come From?
Our logo was designed by celebrated British artist Alan Aldridge for the first Hard Rock Café Menu. It was later imprinted on a few shirts when the Hard Rock Café London decided to sponsor a local soccer team.
Theories on The Origin of Our Name:
Although the origin remains a mystery, there are a few theories—the subject of much debate—as to how the Hard Rock Café name came about. . .
- It was the name of the café depicted on The Doors’ album Morrison Hotel.
- It was part of founder Isaac Tigrett’s favorite parable: “We are all born into this world with a big boulder on our shoulder. Every day we chip at it until, at the end of our lives, all that is left is a small hard rock that makes up you!”
- A similar name, Bedrock Café, appeared on one of Tigrett’s favorite cartoons—The Flintstones.
Now you know the theories, you decide which one it really was!
